16.2.17                            ‘Empowering Successful Learners Together’

Parents and Caregivers,

I hope you created a lot of happy memories over our hottest Christmas holiday break yet.  Room 10 is our new entrants bilingual class working toward Level 2 reo. What does that mean?  It means a few things: working towards 50-80% spoken reo environment, students will be learning the Maori alphabet and sounds not English, number Stages 0-1, being able to write their name, knowing what a Whainga Ako (Learning Intention) is and a Whainga Mahi (Success Criteria) and what they look like.  Assessments will be administered in te reo.

Term 1 is all about Mrs Nathan getting to know your child, your child getting to know Mrs Nathan, and settling into firm classroom routines.  She will be looking forward to working collaboratively with the whanau to accelerate student learning.  Mrs Nathan will provide a safe stimulating environment to help promote korero (speaking i roto i te reo) alongside a variety of learning options.  Every Friday is a morning filled with children’s awareness of our community and developing their finer motor skills. I will endeavour to build confident young learners.

I commend you on getting your child to school on time every day.  Our class is aiming for 100% attendance.  I will be trying something new for Homework this year.  It is great spending your evenings eating together as a family, massive conversation and learning opportunities here, point and read their letters, sounds and numbers together, playing, laughing and more playing.  Oh and getting your child to bed nice and early.

Check out our classroom blog and see what we’ve been up to. You can talk to us on this site, please visit and leave a comment for the tamariki.
